Igor Stimac, head coach of the Indian Senior Men's Football Team, has announced a 26-man provisional squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers. The squad, preparing for matches against Kuwait and Qatar in June, features a blend of experienced veterans and exciting new prospects.

Stimac has retained the core of the team that performed well in the earlier qualifiers. Sunil Chhetri, India's all-time leading scorer, continues to lead the line, his experience and leadership crucial in these high-pressure fixtures.  Skipper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu remains the undisputed choice in goal, with Amrinder Singh providing a reliable backup option.

The midfield sees the return of creative forces like Brandon Fernandes and Isak Vanlalruatfela.  However, some key names are missing.  Anirudh Thapa and Sahal Abdul Samad, who played pivotal roles in previous qualifiers, are notable absentees due to injury and loss of form, respectively.

Stimac has addressed these gaps by including some fresh faces.  Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, known for his energetic box-to-box play, and Vibin Mohanan, who impressed in the I-League, are exciting young midfield additions.  The inclusion of four I-League players, including defender Muhammad Hammad and forward David Lalhlansanga, signifies Stimac's commitment to scouting talent from across the Indian football landscape.

The backline remains largely unchanged, with experienced campaigners like Sandesh Jhingan and Narayan Das expected to marshal the defense.  A notable inclusion is Narender Gahlot, who offers versatility, playing both center-back and defensive midfield.

India currently sits second in Group A, with a chance to secure qualification for the next round of the qualifiers.  Their upcoming matches against Kuwait on June 6th in Kolkata and Qatar on June 11th in Doha will be crucial.

"We have a good mix of experience and youth in this squad," said Stimac.  "The players understand the importance of these matches. We will be well-prepared and determined to achieve positive results."

The final 23-man squad will be announced after a training camp in Bhubaneswar, where Stimac will assess the players' fitness and form.  Indian football fans remain optimistic, hoping this squad can deliver a historic qualification for the next stage of the World Cup journey.
